What is this?

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you want to play a tabletop RPG style fantasy battle, but all you have available is a chess board and a classic six-sided dice? I have.

To be specific, I just realized that I need a set of rules for using a giant outdoor chess set in an park-RPG event next summer, and I thought I'll just write one myself.

So the ChessBattles was born. It is a combat system that uses the Chessboard as a battlemap and a single dice to bring in some random variables.    In ChessBattles the familiar pieces of chess represent different types of fantasy character archetypes with their own special powers, hitpoints and moves.

There are several ways to use the module. For example, you can use the rules as a combat addon for a more story-driven role-playing game session, with the game master on one side and the players on the other. The module also works well as a standalone arena type board game with a tournament style of play. GMs can also use ChessBattles as a part of their living world in their campaigns, for example as a popular game played in taverns and markets.

I hope you have fun playing ChessBattles!

Been looking to "even out" a chess match with a friend of mine. This looks like a great set of rules if you want to mix up the game. Reminds me of 'Knigtmare Chess' with a bit of 'The Duke' but alot more streamlined.

Hi and thanks for the comment! It makes me happy that you like the game! I have had some fun moments playing battles with a chessboard! Streamlined easy access was what I was going for. Combined with lightness when printed, so the rules could fit inside a chess set.
